General Requirements
To qualify for our Class 1 MELT program, you must meet the following criteria:
Be at least 18 years old
Have a non-probationary (non - GDL) Class 5 Alberta driver’s licence minimum
Are you a truck driver in Alberta looking to obtain a Class 1 license?
As of March 1, 2019, Alberta Transportation has mandated the Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) Program for those seeking a Class 1 license. This program consists of three components: classroom instruction, in-yard instruction, and behind-the-wheel instruction. With a total of 121.5 hours, including Air Brakes, or 113 hours for those who already have the Air Brake endorsement, this program will ensure that you are fully equipped to handle all aspects of driving a Class 1 vehicle.

Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT) with Air Brake Program
- 57 hours – behind-the-wheel in-truck training
- 17.5 hours – in-yard training
- 47 hours – in-classroom training

If you hold either a “Q” endorsement on your driver's license or have already completed the Air Brakes Course and possess a valid endorsement certificate, you do not require having to go through the Air Brakes Course.

- 15.5 hours – in-yard training
- 40.5 hours – in-classroom training
